Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/nature.html#anchor_65 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (CONTEMPORARY) ELECTRONIC MUSIC * Chrome DreamsV.A.: Forbidden Planets volume 2 (VAR,1921-1960/comp.2011)*+++' CD1, Tr.11, Karlheinz Stockhausen : "Etude" (1952) 3 min CD2, Tr.2, Vladimir Ussachevsky : "piece for tape recorder" (1956) 6 min (CD2, Tr.3, Bengt Hambaeus : "Doppelrohr II" (1956)) CD2, Tr.10, Richard Maxfield : "Sine Music(A Swarm Of Butterflies)"(1959) 7 min 16 -30 While volume one is a very good electronic music compilation, these are strange more the worlds of contemporary music. The Stockhausen piece sounds normal and logical today but was a painstaking effort to achieve this idea. Like a world on its own. The Ussachevsky piece, with gong, piano, cymbal and tape manipulation is more like a sound-soundtrack. Ussachevsky was born in Mongolia but emigrated towards the US. Richard Maxfield made interesting organic sine wave compositions. Of course we also hear an industrial/post-punk music influence here and there. First track is a dark, repetitive and rather sequenced electronic rhythm. The second is equally repetitive and dark, machine-like and is more hypnotic. The Kurt Volentine loop-like track is also interesting, but repeats itself perhaps a bit too long. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_644 * NMA Magazine V.A.: NMA TAPES 6 (AU,1988)**+ Mostly computer music related recordings on this tape. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_644 * Fylkingen V.A. : Forerunners, Swedish electronic and concrete music 1955-65 (S,2008)***+ Tr.1, Karl-Birger Blomdahl : "Mimamusik" (1959) (fragment) 5 min -55 Compilation from the Swedish electronic music scene. From Karl-Birger Blomdahl' s "Anaria" (1959) some parts were used in Stanley Kubrick's "2001-a Space Odyssey". A very moody piece for those years of early electronic music. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_613 * Fylkingen Lars-Gunnar Bodin : Clouds (S,1977+' 73,' 86-/re.2005)***++ Tr.2, "Expansion from B (+..Through..) Interludium I" (1977) 5 min Tr.8, "Song-Flakes, The Animal with two bellies" (1977) 6 min 11-66 Extraordinary contemporary music piece by composer Bodin. This is voices mixed with electro-acoustic sound manipulation. Two great fragments. Very subtle and very vivid. Unusual use of (combined) voices as an instrument. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_609 * Fylkingen V.A. : Text-Sound Composition A Stockholm Festival -5CD box- (S,re.2005)*+++ CD2, Tr.7, Sten Hanson: "Che" (1968) 2 min CD5, Tr.3, Franz Mon: "Blaiberg Funeral" (1970) (10 min) (fragment max. 3 min) 3 CD5, Tr.9, Paul De Vree : "Stockholm Ode, April bij Sneeuw" (rec.1965) 6 min 12-78 Reissue of 5 LP' s from the Swedish based sound poetry festival. Voice sound manipulation. This strong statement with this " Che" recording is perhaps my favourite track. Franz Mon' s track has something musical and abstract, but a fragment only sounds best. And we also have one Belgian (or even Antwerp) contribution, by Paul De Vree (°1983). Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/poetry.html#anchor_614 Info Paul De Vree : http://users.telenet.be/louis.jacobs/De_Vree.html And see also http://www.muhka.be/verzamelt_depot_artist.php?person_id=123&letter=V&la=nl * Fylkingen Rozenhall : Forecusst (S,2008)**' ' ' Better to listen from start to finish then to take out fragments. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_628 * Fylkingen Rozenhall (S,2001,2003,comp.2009)***++ Tr.3, "Eyeland Part 2" 20 min -98 This track for a big part sounds like a gigantic living slowly moving entity or machine consisting of bees. A highlighting, successful electronic music track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_615 * Fylkingen Mattias Petersson & Fredrik Olofsson : Strom (S,2008)***+ DVD. A shame I cannot play the audio track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_614 * Basta V.A. :Anthology of Dutch Electronic Music 1999-2010 -2cd- (NL,pub.2011)*+ 2 min -101 In the end a not too rewarding compilation. None of the tracks stand out. This is more improvised music consuming sound and time. I considered choosing a fragment of Jan-Bas Bollen but in the end I didn't. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic5.html#anchor_569 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEAT-DRIVEN AND SEQUENED ELECTRONICS : * DiNDDL Lyonell Bauchet : The Secret Society -digi- (F,comp.2011)***' (Tr.2, "Lifeworld" 10 min -110 (fragment)) Tr.5, "So Much For Subtlety" 4 min 4 105 A compilation of rhythm driven electronic music built around the huge Buchla synthesiser. It is compared to the contemporary music a much more commercial simplified approach but with its own still rather rewarding effect. A mixture of cosmic music, ambient music and new electro. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/electronicmusic6.html#anchor_650 * Merlins Nose Marcus Robbin : Last Hippie Standing (D,2002,re.2011)*** DVD reissue of a documentary about the Goa Trance origins in Goa, India. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/newpsych2.html#anchor_274 * Planet Mu Venetian Snares : Cubist Reggae -EP 12"- (UK,2011)***+' Tr.B1, "The Identification Circles Levitate" 4 min Tr.B2, "You Discovered The Secret And Juiced It For All Its Majesty" 4 min 8 113 (Tr.A1, "Ever Apparent All Being Shoulder" 4 min) Brilliant as ever Venetian Snares based himself on reggae rhythms this time and turned them upside down into new break beat driven electro. The first chosen track is quiet but has clever details. Don't know if it really is supposed to be played on 45rpm but I love it this way. 33Rpm sounds good too. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/progbeats.html#anchor_324 * Ninja Tunes Amon Tobin : Isam (US,2011)****' Tr.3, “Go To 10” 5 min Tr.4, “Surge” 3 min I almost forgot to add this new album, but I had enough time left to add 2 tracks. Amon Tobin's show this year must have been a master piece of computer driven images with sound. The music itself is mixed professionally too. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/progbeats.html#anchor_318 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- OUTRO: NEW MUSIC * Innova Mc Maguire : Nothing Left To Destroy (CAN,2011)***+ Tr.1, "The Discofication of the Mongols" (36 min) (fragment : time left of the the show) 8 Contemporary classical with a different idea of sampling and sound manipulation.
