TOUAREG GUITAR BANDS SPECIAL (and some AFRO-CENTRIC WESTERN BANDS) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- review grading in playlist based upon separate track browsing/skipping. **g ***vg ****perf ?some tracks better 'some tracks better from different angle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- intro 2 min -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART 1 :OVERVIEW OF SOME TOUAREG GUITAR MUSIC PERIOD 1 : THE UNKNOWN,THE UNHEARD: guitar distortion and a portion of wildness. * Sublime Freq. Group Doueh : Treeg Salam (WS,rec.1989-1996,pub.2009)**°°' Tr.2, “Ragsa Jaguar” 6 min Tr.5, “Tazit Kalifa” 20 min (? 7 min) 13 -16 The first underground period shows moments of electric/distorted/wild experiences, some of it sound rather psychedelic, like this droning second track with organ, guitar and voice only, with the first 7 minutes without percussion. This whole track is very improvised. One of the strangest Touareg releases. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_265 * Sublime Freq. Group Bombino : Guitars From Agadez Vol. 2 (Ni,2007)**° Tr.9, “Eronafene Tihoussayene”(live,2007) 5 min -21 Heavy electric distorted guitar live track with pushing bass. Because of circumstances played later in the show. * Sublime Freq. Group Inerane : Guitars From Agadez Vol. 3 -digi- (Ni,?) Tr.1, “Telalit” 6 min -26 No review yet PERIOD 2 : THE DISCOVERY : a cleaned up sound, message to the world. * Crammed Tartit : Abacabok (MAL,2006)**' No airplay http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_242 * Culture & Resist. Desert Rebel : Ishumars les Rockers Oubliés du Desert -dvd + cd (NI/F,2007)***°+**° Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_236 * World Etran Finatawa : introducing (ML,2006)***° Tr.1, “Surbajo” 6 min 32 Mixed group of Touareg/Wodabe, as one of the first electric guitar groups. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_336 * Re-Aktion V.A. : Ishumar -music of the Touareg Resistance- (ML/NI,2008)***° Tr.5, Mohamed Ag Itlal aka Japonais (ML) : “Zinesdjou Merghdem” 5 min Tr.6, Omar Moctar aka Bambino (NI) : “Imuhar” 5 min * Re-Aktion Omar Moctar aka Bambino : Agam -digi- (NI,2004)***° Tr.4, “Intidgagen” 6 min -48 Review of this album soon. Best guitarist from the scene. The electric track was played during the show on this place: * Sublime Freq. Group Bombino : Guitars From Agadez Vol. 2 (Ni,2007)**° Tr.9, “Eronafene Tihoussayene”(live,2007) 5 min -21 Heavy electric distorted guitar live track with pushing bass. * Re-Aktion V.A. : Ishumar -music of the Touareg Resistance- (ML/NI,2008)***° Tr.8, Koudede (NI) : “Alam'i” 4 min (played in fact earlier, after first Bambino track) Tr.12,Toumast : “Ammilana” (NI/F) 5 min 9 -57 One acoustic guitar piece, and another nicely sounding acoustic guitar based piece. The third piece is sad blues. A good compilation. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_304 * Real World Toumast : Ishumar (2007)**°°' Tr.1, “These countries that are not mine” 5 min Tr.5, “The Camel” 3 min 8 -65 Possibly one of the most rewarding Touareg releases. France based. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_324 PERIOD 3 :FURTHER EXPLOITATION and DEEPENING THE SPOKEN WORD. * Re-Aktion V.A. : Ishumar 2 -new Touareg Guitars- (ML/NI/ALG,2011)**°' No tracks chosen. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_304 * Re-Aktion Nabil Othmani : Tamghart In (ALG,2010)**° Tr.1, “Djanet” 4 min Tr.7, “Aran Adam” 3 min 7 -72 Lighter tone of new acoustic guitar based band and solo music with a singer/songwriter context. Two original tracks. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_313 * Cambancha Bombino : Agadez (Ni,2011)***° Tr.6, “The Desert, my home” (Tenere) 4 min 76 Again, a comparison with one of the more interesting guitarist from the movement: one of the most promising figures of the second generation of Touareg guitar music. I only realised a little time later that Bombino and Bambino are really one and the same. As you could hear, there is some variation in the recordings too. This one has, of course, a cleaner (and more professionally recorded/produced) sound compared to the private recordings. * Zero Gravity Films Ron Wyman : Agadez, The Music and the Rebellion -DVD- (NI,2011)***** Documentary about the Touareg movement and about Bombino/Bambino. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_289 * Igloo Mondo Kel Assouf : Tin Hinane (GH/ML/ALG/MR/F-B,2011)***° Tr.3, “Akaline” 5 min 81 Belgium based band with various Western Africans. Good crossover band. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_296* * Re-aktion Amanar: Alghafiat –digi-(ML,2010)**° Tr.9, “Sarkai” 6 min 87 Simple and repetitive Touareg band music. I like this song best. The fine “Tenere” was airplayed instead due to an error in downloading the MP3 onto a stick for the show. This track has a nice ethnic flute contribution. * World Music V.A.: The Rough Guide to Desert Blues (VAR,2010)**° Tr.13, Tamikrest (ML): “Aratane N'Adagh” 6 min 93 (from “Adagh”) (shortened and faded in next track) No review of this compilation, which is only partly about Touareg music. A sad song, fitting well with the next one. * Glitterhouse Tamikrest : Toumastin (ML,2011)**°° Tr.6, “Aidjan Adaky” 6 min (shortened a bit) Tr.7, “Addektegh” 3 min 9 -102 One of the new bands in the footsteps of Tinarwen. A sad electric song. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa2.html#anchor_329 * Re-aktion Ibrahim Djo experience : Azeman -digi-(2011)??? Tr.1, “Azeman” 5 min 107 Hopefully will be reviewed afterwards. Nice sound of a new Touareg band. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OUTRO: AFRO-MINDED WESTERN BANDS: * Ubiguity Ikebe Shakedown (US,2011)***° Tr.2, “Kumasi Walk” 5 min 112 At times jazzy & mostly funky Afro-centric western groove music. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa-out.html#anchor_284 * Ubiguity The Echocentrics : Sunshadows (US,2011)***' Shit I forgot this release at home, so no airplay now ; no time for it any how. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/prog11c.html#anchor_235 * Ubiguity Nomo : Ghost Rock (US,2008)**** Tr.2, “All the Stars” 7 min (if time left : Tr.8, “Three Shades” 6 min -end of show) Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/africa-out.html#anchor_289 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homepage radioshow : http://psychefolk.com/ Playlists : http://psychefolk.com/2011.html Newsletter with new reviews and playlists with some audio links : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psychevanhetfolk/ Subscribe to newsletter with playlists/new reviews: psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
