Best tracks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- grading in reviews for gradings of sum of individual tracks… *** vg **** perf ***** must have heard/can’t get better +°some tracks better +‘ possibly better, according to opinion/vision ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro 3 min * Lost Lights Michael Rodgers : Twilight, Birds -mcdr- (US,2010)***°’ Tr.6, 3 min 6 Improvisations on a blackbird singing, environmental street sounds and the wind blowing in the leaves. I like the idea. 150 numbered copies hand-made only. My favourite track. Sounds like an Adrican music theme printed on the leaves with sound being filtered through what the eyes can see. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar15.html#anchor_536 * Strange Attractors Sean Smith : Eternal –LP/CD-(US,2007,pub.2010)***° Tr.3, “Goat Seer” 5 min 11 Post-Dahey fingerpickings. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar15.html#anchor_532 * The Tall House M.Mucci : Time Lost -LP/digi- (CAN,2010)***° ? Tr.2, “The view from here” 7 min 18 Nice Fahey-esque guitar piece. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar13.html#anchor_449 * Sublime Frequencies V.A.: Ethnic minority music of Northwest Xinjiang, China (CN,2009)**°°’ Tr.5, Xia Ar Ghen Aokhan : “Atamake” 3 min Tr.16, Kurmanjiang Zaccharia : “White Swan” 5 min 8 -26 Two of the most remarkable, most contemporary and most technically crafted pieces on this compilation. A composition played on the komuz and another one on the dongbra. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/Chinafolk.html#anchor_336 * Honest Jones V.A. : Open Strings -2CD- (US/D/EG/IQ/TU,1920s+2010)***+**°° The first CD is folk from the Middle East, the second CD are new interpretations by western players. From the traditional part I like the violin part the most, but for really taking out tracks it is less rewarding. Also the guitar part could have been better. Steffen Basho-Junghans stands out. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar15.html#anchor_528 * Bo'Weavil Leaves From Off The Tree (UK/US,re.2010)***’ This is to let you know this album has been re-released. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/leavesfromoffthetree.html#anchor_86 * Girlhenge Pamela Wyn Shannon : Courting Autumn -cdr/cd- (UK,2007)***** This is to let you know this was previously only on CDR, now also on CD (not sure since when). Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/pamelawynshannon.html#anchor_76 * Proper Music Catherine Howe & Vo Fletcher : Going Home -EP- (UK,2010)**°° Tr.2, “Nothing love does surprise me” 5 min -31 New album from this 60s/70s artist, who did not lose her inspirational talent or voice. This track has some folk influence. It almost sounds like a traditional but is a self-penned song. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/catherinehowe.html#anchor_529 * Voiceprint Slapp Happy : Ca va (UK,rec.1997,pub.2009)**’ A good album but less suitable for taking songs out. The 80s production makes it worse. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/slapphappy.html#anchor_307 * Voiceprint Slapp Happy : Live in Japan (UK,2010)**°° Being avant-garde pop in the 70s this has been tempered down now. Nice concert and some well penned songs, like “Scarred for life” or the honest “Let’s travel light”. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/slapphappy.html#anchor_313 * Drag City Elisa Randazzo : Bruises and Butterflies (US,2010)***° Tr.1, “Remember May” 4 min Tr.4, “Colors” 4 min 8 -39 An album which remembers the 60s/70s songwriter days of Eisa’s parents and beyond. Two songs were written by Bridget St.John and one other co-written by BSJ and Aaron Randazzo. She remembers two scenes, the folk songwriters and the West Coast area. These two songs illustrate this successfully. The album grew on me with each listen. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/elisarandazzo.html#anchor_307 * Megaphone Karen Dalton : Cotton Eyed Joe -2CD- (US,1962,pub.2007)**°° Very early live concert showing Karen’s expressive feeling for blues folk. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/karendalton.html#anchor_181 * Sunbeam Mary-Anne : Me (UK,1970,re.2006)***°' Partly gospel-folk, hippie-folk and traditional folk with a mellow/melting-gentle flavour. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/mary-anne.html * Locust Jay Bolotin (US,1969,re.2009)***°° Tr.3, “It’s all in that” 6 min -45 I have airplayed the brilliant song “Dear Father” before. Here’s another fine song. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/jaybolotin.html#anchor_300 * Almakarma Bob Theil : The Ghent Sessions –LP- (UK/B,1997,re.2010)****° Tr.1, “Nice and easy does it” 6 min Tr.4, “A moment’s respite (instrumental)” 4 min Tr.7, “Flux and Flow (instrumental)” 6 min Tr.9, “Heartbeats” 4 min Tr.10, “Only what you think you are” 4 min 24 -63 Wonderful live concert with great songs. Now worldwide available on LP. There is some sparse keyboard on the instrumentals and mando-strat on track 9 and bass on track 10 played by Dave Foster. Philippe De Chaffoy (Patrick Conrad) played violin on the first track. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/bobtheil.html#anchor_35 * Rusted Rail Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon : The Trees, The Sea in a lunar Stream(IR/UK,2010)***° Tr.1, “As perceived by mice” 6 min 69 Beautiful broken voice on this track. Talented. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/phantomdogbeneaththemoon.html#anchor_854 * Odland Ödland : Ottocento F,2010)****° Tr.2, “La jalousie amoureuse” 4 min Tr.6, “Les yeux de l’oiseau” 5 min 79 Wonderful acid chamber folk cabaret fantasy. Remember Cocorosie’s debut ? This is even more real. Remember Amélie Poulin.. Essential. Highly recommended! Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/odland.html#anchor_1187 * In Polysons Klimperei : Improvisation with myself 2 (F,2010)**°’ Tr.6, “Bruno Schultz” 3 min 82 Light-weird, surreal playful, sometimes a bit darker instrumentals. Inspired like a cabinet with Writers who turned into instrumentals. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/klimperei.html#anchor_393 * In Polysons Klimperei : Improvisation with myself 3 (F,2010)**° Improvisations based upon Klimperei’s world. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/klimperei.html#anchor_393 * Type The Alps : Le Voyage -LP/CD- (US,2010)**° Tr.2, “Marzipan” 1 min Tr.7, “Saturno Contro” 4 min 5-87 Tr.10,“Telepathe” 5 min (shortened to 3 min) 10 -90 “Marzipan” is a track clearly taken/inspired from Battiatio’s “Pollution”. Track 7 has some Pink Floyd influence. Simple moody rather improvised instrumentals with a few retro-psych touches. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/thealps.html#anchor_387 * September Gurls Temple of L.I.B.: My Name Is Magic -LP/CD- (D,2010)***° Tr.4, “Swirling Leaves” 3 min Tr.7, “Dream a weaving” 4 min -97 Tr.10,“Spiral track” 10 min (shortened to 4 min) -101 Often rather melancholic-psychedelic post-Fit & Limo solo project by the “Limo” part, with some help of some musical friends. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/templeoflib.html#anchor_147 * Subliminal Sounds Lisa O Piu : Behind The Bend –MCD/LP-(S,2010)****° Tr.2, “Simplicity” 5 min Tr.5, “Gong for hours” 12 min 17 118 Beautiful delicate psych-folk. Review : http://psychedelicfolk.com/lisaopiu.html#anchor_960 * Subliminal Sounds The Amazing : Wait For a Light To Come (S,2010)***' Tr.2, “And it looks like today” 4 min 4 min -> end of show New prog mixed with psych-folk. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/sweden4.html#anchor_251 * September Gurls The Smell Of Incense : A Curious Miscellany (N,1991-2005,comp.2010)*** No time to take out a track. It is a nice compilation but there are little outstanding moments.
