Here are some of the unique moments which in these versions might not have been heard before. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/ErikDeVries.html#anchor_301 - GUITAR : * Thrill Jockey Jack Rose : Luck In The Valley (US,rec.2009,pub.2010)***° Tr.5, “Moon In The Gutter” 4 min 16 Old Timey songs and some raga guitar. My favourite, perhaps most original track. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar12.html#anchor_408 * Arch.of Harm.Rooms Steffen Basho-Junghans : IS -LP- (D,rec.2000-2006,pub.2009)****° Tr.6, “…and like the Wind we go” 5 min 21 One of the most accessible tracks this time of this talented guitarist. Review : http://psychefolk.com/basho.html#anchor_66 - SINGERS/SONGWRITERS : * Pink Hedgehog Peter Lacey : Behind the scenes -cdr- (UK,2009)***° Tr.3, “Sunday Painter” 3 min Tr.8, “Behind the scenes” 4 min 7 -28 A catchy and another well arranged song by this unknown talent and especially a nicely coloured voice. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/PeterLacey.html#anchor_300 * Pink Hedgehog Peter Lacey & Stephen John Kalinich : South Downs Way -cdr- (UK/US,2009)°°° Tr.5, “South Downs Way Suite” (3 parts) 7 min -35 Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/PeterLacey.html#anchor_300 * Autumn Ferment "Seasonal Sevens : Winter" Dusty Stray / Flake Brown (NL/UK,2010)***** Tr.A, Dusty Stray : “Winter’s Day” 3 min Tr.AA, Flake Brown : “Cool Is The snow” 3 min 6 -41 Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/flakebrown.html#anchor_270 * Basta Dusty Stray : Tales of Misfortune and Woe (NL/US,2009)**°°? Tr.4, “Brother” 5 min 46 Dramatic ballads song collection in a much lighter style than that. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/DustyStray.html#anchor_300 (soon) * Excalibur Anneke Konings : Feelings & Fairytales (NL,1971-1975,comp.2010)***°° Tr.2, “You Know who I am” (Leonard Cohen) 4 min Tr.10, “Zon” (Stephen Stills/A.K.) 3 min Tr.11, “Desillusie” 5 min 12 -58 Great compilation of this Flower Power girl. The Cohen track is a bit Melanie-like, a great interpretation. “Zon” is a convincing translation of a Stephen Stills tracks. “Desillusie” reminds a bit of Cat Steven’s “Sad Lisa” also is one of her strongest tracks, a must-have. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/AnnekeKonings.html#anchor_80 * Freeworld/Fl.World Alison O'Donnell : Hey Hey Hippy Witch (UK,rec.2006-2007,pub.2010)**° Memories of songs collected during extensive touring, here and there with Irish folk influences. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk-rock.html#anchor_152 * Dig.Industries V.A. : Gold Leaf Branches -3CD- (UK,US,FIN,2009)°° Much less than mediocre 3CD compilation. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/free.html#anchor_520 * Leaf Nancy Elizabeth : Wrought Iron (UK,2009)**°’ Tr.8, “Lay Low” 4 min Tr.11,“Winter, Baby” 3 min 7 -65 An album a bit too minimal and in a loner-mood to convince me enough, but these two tracks still stand out. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/NancyElizabethCunliffe.html#anchor_484 * Leo Evgeny Masloboev & Anastasia Masloboeva : Russian folksongs in the key of sadness (RU,2010)***° Tr.7, “Medunitsa” 7 min 72 Lonely Siberian folk songs with mostly sparsely improvised arrangements. On this track there’s a bit more percussion and piano and a trumpet solo, and then glockenspiel/piano and drums and some drone. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/RU4.html#anchor_139 * New Albion Somei Satoh : Mandara Trilogy (JAP,rec.1982,1986,1990,pub.1998)**** Voice arrangements and electronic filters, 3 pieces inspired from Buddhist paintings. Not the right moment to airplay a track. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/someisatoh.html#anchor_300 - PROGRESSIVE / PSYCH / JAZZ: * Phoenix People : Ceremony - Buddha meet rock (JAP,rec.1971,re.2009)***°' One of the only progressive Buddha rock albums. The second track is mixed with rock song. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar15.html#anchor_520 * Enhanced Tandava (CAN/IND/CHI,2006)***°' Tr.9, “Common ground” 6 min Tr.10,“Anand” 4 min 10 -92 All-world Fusion with many improvised bridges. The violin instrument is a Chinese erhu. Last track is with gamelan. My favourite Tandava tracks, also interesting for its fusion / crossover abilities. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/WORLD2.html#anchor_122 * BVHaast Ensemble Gending : Soekarno Blues (NL/DK/(INDO),rec.1997)*°°’’ Tr.1, “Soekarno Blues” 15 min 107 Gamelan music composed by Western (Dutch) composers. The most interesting track for its crossover bridges is this one from Willem Breuker. It took me a few listens before I could stand enough the execution by the singer which could have been better, but the track is interesting enough and well played not to miss. The track alone I think still is worth checking out the disc. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/newmusic.html#anchor_125 - ACOUSTIC CHAMBER CROSSOVERS: * private PROJECT Trio (US,2009)***° Tr.1, “Dr.Nick” 4 min Tr.4, “Blue Ronda A la Turk” 6 min 117 An often rhythmically swinging rather entertainment fun making classically trained chamber orchestra with an interesting flutist who also uses jazz flute and rap/beatbox flute. Review : http://psychemusic.org/chambermusicrock.html#anchor_333 * Home Deux Accords diront : Eisherz (B,2010)***° Tr.1, “Coeur” 2 min 119 The great tricky intro which makes you think this will become a baroque jazz album or so. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/belgiumfolk.html#anchor_114 * Home Turdus Philomelos : Ici Maintenant Là Pouf! (B,2010)**° Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/belgium.html#anchor_168 * Home Klezmic Zirkus : 13.Chemin des Mandarines (B,2010)***° Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/belgium3.html#anchor_186 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homepage radioshow : http://psychefolk.com/ Playlists : http://psychefolk.com/2010.html Newsletter with new reviews and playlists with some audio links : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/psychevanhetfolk/ Subscribe: psychevanhetfolk-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
