Review : http://psychemusic.org/prog19.html#anchor_206 * Ozella Axel Schultheiss : On Wings (D,2009)***° Tr.5, “Koan 2” 2 min Tr.6, “Summer’s End” 7 min -9 20 Guitar music, from ambient to prepared and mood excursions. Best listen from start to finish. This is a prepared guitar piece, followed by a mood piece with multiple guitar overdubs. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/guitar6.html#anchor_221 * Beta-Lactam Textile Orchestra : For The Boss (UK,2008)?? Free improvisation with turntable, percussion, mixing board, electrophone & violin. With use of rather aggressive peaks too. Demands concentrated listen! Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/free.html#anchor_508 * Time-Lag Lula Cortes 80 : Rosa De Sangue -LP/CD-(BRAZ,1980,re.2009)***° Tr.4, “Nordeste Oriental” 4 min Tr.8, “Dos Inimigos” 4 min -8 28 The album might ask a few listens for its different sort of tracks. Two favourite tracks. One of rarest albums with Lula Cortes (Cortes/Ramhalo, Satwa,...). Released after the bancrupcy of the only independent label in Brazil around that time, Roseblit. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/70S.html#anchor_307 * 10 to 1 Simon Finn : Rats Laugh Mice Sing (UK,2009)***° Tr.1, “Mice sing” 1 min Tr.3, “Zoo” 3 min Tr.10,“Antique News” 3 min Tr.15,“No hard shoulder” 1 min -8 35 Strong song album with fine arrangements. Review: http://singersong.homestead.com/SimonFinn.html#anchor_91 * EMI Elly & Rikkert : Maarten en het witte paard (NL,1973,re.2004)***°' Tr.4, “Als je overal zijn wilt” 3 min Tr.9, “Maarten” 6 min -9 44 From the period the duo still had connections with a mystic dreamy search in reality and fairytales. Even when this song mentions a man with a message of Jesus, this is before they ever thought of embracing this idea themselves. Like the songs show here they remained more like open minded hippies or just open people. Some parts were made for children, but are enjoyable for anybody. This album is a soft- pastoral story. Especially side B with the fairytale is rather special. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/EllyRikkert.html#anchor_236 * Ohr Witthüser & Westrupp : Trips und Träme (D,1971)****° Tr.6, “Das Märchen vom Köningssohn” 10 min 54 In the previous review I mentioned the fairytales from W&W. Here you have one of them. A unique band with sometimes very funny lyrics sometimes inspired by hashish. Musically from here you could also check Holderlin’s “Troum” and from there also Langsyne & Bröselmachine. Because Langsyne is less known I will airplay it next. Info : http://psychedelicfolk.com/Germanprogfolk.html * Rebirth Langsyne (D,1976)****° Tr.3, “Changing” 7 min 61 Sung in English, beautiful psychfolk from Germany (with guitar, psalter, glockenspiel, flute, banjo, kazoo, voices), reminding of Incredible String Band a bit. Info : http://psychedelicfolk.com/Germanprogfolk.html * Autumn Ferment Woodpecker Wooliams : Diving Down (UK,2009)***°’ Tr.1, “Put a bird” 5 min 8-69 Tr.2, “The lamentable love of the barometer” 3 min New psychfolk : beautifully arranged and with a nice voice and vocal arrangements. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview30.html#anchor_1188 * Further Out Annabel (Lee) : demo (UK,2009)****° Tr.4, “Autumn Requiem” 6 min Tr.6, “Glow” 4 min 10 -79 Beautiful colourful and soulful darkness in these songs is pretty unique. Labels ? I have airplayed other tracks before. Remember Patty Waters ? I don’t understand how there is still is no label interested in releasing this majestic emotional beauty. For me this is a classic already. This last song makes me cry. Hope to have reviewed the full release soon. Review soon on http://singersong.homestead.com/AnnabelLee.html#anchor_814 * Rough Trade Antony and the Johnsons : The Crying Light (US,2008)***° Tr.3, “One Dove” 6 min 85 Another favourite voice, technically and emotionally Antony remains to have unique qualities there. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/AnthonyTheJohnsons.html#anchor_230 * Wildlife Paz Lenchantin : Songs for Luci -LP-(US,2006,re.2009)***° Tr.2, “Kentucky Hymn” 4 min 3 Tr.3, “Violins” 1 min 90 This old demo is released on LP now. Therefore a second broadcast since its previous CDR presentation. String arrangement of this first track comes close to Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview23.html#anchor_862 * Bracken Mark Fry : Dreaming with Alice -single (UK,2009)**°’ Tr.5 (on sampler), “Dreaming with Alice” 7 min 97 PS. The series is dedicated to old songs. Mark Fry has of course new songs ready to present to the world. This song in this new, convincing version comes from his old album. Mark Fry’s album was a fine example of a psych-folk song album. Let’s hear more you, Mark. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/MarkFry.html#anchor_213 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART 2 : FROM WORLD CROSSOVERS TO... * Drag City Sir Richard Bishop : The Freak of Araby (UK,2009)**°’ Tr.1, “Taqasim for Omar” 8 min 105 This album is dedicated to the great Lebanese electric guitarist Omar Khorshid. Technically I heard better performances of the traditional but it still is a nice relaxed dedication to the Lebanese electric guitarists from the 70s. Best to listen from start to finish to be most convincing. Not an album for those who are already too familiar with Arab electric guitar music, but a nice introduction for the curious newbies. His own piece still stands out. Next Omar Khorshid track proves how rightful SRB was with/in his own interpretation. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/SirRichardBishop.html#anchor_217 * Umbrella Omar Khorshid & his guitar (LEB,1974)****° Tr.4, “Laylet Hom” 9 min 114 From the best album I know from Omar Khorshid. Electric guitar with moog, Harmonica/harmonium? and belly dance percussion. Sunny music. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/omarkorshid.html#anchor_104 * Unicorn Digital Agah Bahari : The Second Sight Of A Mind (CAN/IR,2009)****’ Tr.1, “Collective Amnesia” 5 min 119 ---------------------------------------------------------extra hour------------- Tr.4, “Everlasting Perfection” 6 min 120+5 Heavy progressive electric guitar led instrumental Music with a rewarding complexity and with a few Persian elements. Of course there’s an emotionality involved when knowing this musician could not express himself with Music like this in his own country and was forced to leave, while he is this is one of the finest examples of new talents and new styles developed in Iran. With Dream Theatre’s keyboard player. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/IRAN.html#anchor_102 * Miya Dodu Cold Fairyland : Live (CN,rec.2005,pub.2006)***° Tr.3, “-chinese title-” 6 min +11 From China this time. The First progressive Group I know coming from there. From the biggest Chinese city, Shanghai. This First chosen track sounds a bit like a more progressive and electrified Changelings or so. The most impressive track from the album. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/China.html#anchor_321 * Projekt Soriah with Ashkelon Sain : Atlan (US/TU,2009)***° Tr.7, “Atlan” 5 min +16 Tuvan and Aztec folk songs sung by Tuvan singer with diverse instruments and dark/coldwave keyboards. The title track is my favourite track. Review : http://www.psychefolk.com/WORLDfusion.html#anchor_126 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PART 3: ...TO PROGRESIVE ROCK. * Gear Fab Chaplin Harness (US,1969,pub.2009)**°’ Tr.4, “Stitch” 5 min +21 Reissue of progressive east coast rock with fine improvisational skills, and here in this instrumental with some jazz flavour. A track which suits best in this show. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/sixties5.html#anchor_315 * Transubstans Gösta Berlings Saga: Detta Har Hänt (S,2009)***’ Tr.1, “Kontrast” 4 min +25 Professional progressive rock. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/Italy.html#anchor_287 * Transubstans Abramis Brama : Smakar Söndag (S,2009)***° Tr.1, “Kylan Kommer Initfran” 6 min 52 Tr.11, “Kommer Hem” 8 min Progressive new hard rock & stoner rock. Last time I played this first track a hurricane started in my neighbourhood (literally). I hope nothing serious will happen this time. A powerful track, perhaps at times a bit too powerful (?). Last track is rather jazzy. Yes, this is the same band. See you in 2 weeks..
