Quite original band with its own sometimes humoristic mystique, as you can hear here. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview14B.html#anchor_398 - SECTION 2 : FROM SINGER-SONGWRITER TO FOLK, ACIDFOLK & WEIRD FOLK: * Autumn Ferment James Reid : Tales Between the Tides -single- (UK,2008)***° Tr.A, “She Waits by the Shore” 5 min 23 New vinyl single by this singer-songwriter. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/jamesreid.html#anchor_277 * Home Tom Theuns : : Songs From The River (B,2009)**°’ Tr.6, “Glass Island” 4 min 27 Nice guitar piece by Jack Swayne (Blowzabella). After some considerations, I think I expected more from Tom. This was inspired by his days with Aurélia. Review : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/minimalism.html#anchor_97 * Home Aurélie Dorzée : Horror Vacui (B,2008)***° Tr.2, “L’Empoissonée” 4 min 31 Tr.4, “Celle qui a du vent dans la tête” 5 min 36 Also singer/songwriter/violist Aurélie has her own solo project. Two great tracks. Notice some small resemblance with Iva Bittovà on track 4. This is her solo project directly after the Aurélia Trio. Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/AurelieDorzee.html#anchor_289 * Meniscus Hump Kim Thompsett : Songs From the Uglee Meadow (UK,2008)**°° Tr.1, “Kitty’s Angel” 4 min Tr.3, “My Love Is A Garden” 5 min 45 S/sw folk & Faerie Pagan folk related inspirations. She has cooperated with Circulus before. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk2.html#anchor_152 * Micropol St.Stephen : Behold (D,2009)**°° Tr.6, “Black Diary” 4 min 49 Mellow-romantic folkpop from Limo with Shiny Gnomes members. A darker, but truly real favourite track. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/psychfolkpopreview7.html#anchor_337 * Wichita Greg Weeks : The Hive (US,2008)****’ Tr.1, “You won’t be the same ever again” 5 min Tr.4, “Borderline” 4 min 58 Another great one by Greg Weeks. It takes a few listens however. I really don’t understand why some people don’t like this Madonna cover. I like it very much. Forget that original and listen closely! Review : http://singersong.homestead.com/GregWeeks.html#anchor_298 * Bo'Weavil Black Flowers : I grew from a stone to a statue (UK,2009)**°’ Tr.4, “..and the words fell..” 9 min 67 Sometimes anti-folkrock, sometimes lalala-band, this is a folk(?)-related project by related musicians from different bands. (Because I just finished the Father Yod lecture) the second track sounds like a post Father Yod inspiration with a song. But I preferred to airplay this track as my favourite, which starts with tons of vocals only. The effect is rather drone-like. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/folk-rock.html#anchor_106 * private cdr Support Force : Interrupted Goode Homolosine Projection –EP-(US,2008)***’ Tr.2, “False” 5 min Tr.3, “The 90's Explainer” 3 min 8-75 Private release of enjoyable hippie-psychedelica. Sometimes distorted. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/acidfolkreview28.html#anchor_1037 * Home V.A. : "Les Singulières" Paris 2009 (B,2009)**** Tr.7, Dietrich : “Sitaros” 4 min 79 The only group on the compilation of the label I don’t know yet. There’s a 3- days Home Records festival soon, in Paris (last weekend of February). See their website for more info. Review : http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/Belgium.html#anchor_156 - SECTION 3 : MIDDLE EASTERN FUSION: * KS Pari Zangeneh : (The series of music for young adults :) Iranian Folk Songs (IR,1976,pub.2009)**°° Tr.7, “Asmar Asmar Djan” 4 min Tr.11,“Aye Laili” 6 min -89 Not too “strong”, but a bit mellow voice, but still this blinded singer after an accident has its own charm. This comes from the Shah period from Iran. Traditional folk songs with a bit more modern arrangements, by one of the main arrangers. Especially these two tracks show great arrangements. (The order might have been more convincing the other way around). I also like the sounds of Persian language ; -very different from most Middle Eastern Languages-. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/PERSIAreviews.html#anchor_55 * A-Andalus Prod. Tarik & Julia Banzi Al-Andalus : Illumination (US/..,1996)***° Tr.4, “Jinette” 6 min 105 Duo with guests make pleasant combinations fusing Indian, Andalusian (flamenco styles, Arab Fusions, oud solos) and jazz elements. An excellent track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/AL-ANDALUS.html#anchor_193 * Ozella Michel Sajrawy : Writings On The wall (IS/D,2009)**** Tr.1, “Bride Of The Galilee” 7 min 113 This Israeli born Arab Christian guitarist Michel Sajrawy most often remains in the jazz territory this time, but some tracks fuse Arab elements too. His guitar style developed further since last release, into the jazz territory. A brilliant fusing track. Review : http://www.psychemusic.org/MichelSajrawy.html#anchor_222 * CRS No Blues : Lumen (NL,2008)***° Tr.5, “Across the borderline” 5 min 118 Blues, folk, singer-songwriting and Arab Fusion arrangements into one project. One fine Arab oud player cooperates with these 3 Dutch members coming from different genres. A nice conclusion for the show. Review : http://psychemusic.org/NoBlues.html#anchor_216 * Home Tri A Tolia : Zumurrude (TÜ/IRQ/B,2008)***° Tr.7, “Hürün” 8 min -> end of show New project of Obama Abdurasol and Melike, with Belgian cello player/arranger. This is an improvisation between cello and kanun.
