TURKISH PROGRESSIVE MUSIC PRESENTS : ------------------------------------------ --------------------------------REPLIKAS---------------------------------------- BIOGRAPHY : In 1993, Gökçe Akçelik, Barkin Engin and Orçun Bastürk laid the foundations of Replikas, which completed it line-up when Selçuk Artut and Erden Özer Yalçinkaya joined in May 1998 and January 2000 respectively. Even before signing a recording contract Replikas had developed a considerable following in Istanbul through playing regular gigs in several nightclubs and giving concerts. They were sponsored by Sabanci University to represent Turkey at the Mediterranean Young Artist's Biennial in Rome in 1999, where they introduced their music to European listeners. In the same year Replikas contributed a song named Gulyabani Müzik to the album Aksi Istikamet, a compilation of numbers from Istanbul's hottest alternative bands. In 2000 the group opened for Alanis Morisette in Istanbul and a wider audience had the opportunity to listen to their music. They recorded their first album Köledoyuran, for Ada Music between July 17 and August 5, 2000. Released in December 2000, it was chosen "Best Turkish Album" of that year by Roll magazine and Porttakal.com. It won further acclaim when a number of music critics sited it as one of the year's best albums. The album's first video clip featured the song "Seyyah". The video was filmed by Adnan Elial and P.T.T. and was played on numerous music programs, receiving positive reviews. The album drew a lot of attention from music writers in America and Europe. A number of foreign underground record companies offered it for sale and various radio stations have played music from the album. It reached #2 on the Internet radio hitlist of WXYC, broadcasting from America. Their version of Stravinsky's Royal March, arranged for the academic and artist Selim Birsel's "Royal Cortege" project, will be released in Italy in the near future and will appear on the multinational compilation Floralia Vol. 4. Replikas is still assimilating all the sounds that influences it, feeding off its own avant-garde nature, and producing a minimal and pure sound all its own. The band has just finished their second album. To be released at the end of 2001, it will be called Dadaruhi. Replikas has also composed music for Serdar Akar's (of "the New Cinema-makers") latest film, "Maruf". The group is already working on their third album. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GO BACK BY CLOSING THIS WINDOW
