Playlist "Psyche Van Het Folk", Radio Centraal,Antwerpen, Belgium ; 2003 may 28: INDIAN FUSIONS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Grey Past Rec.? Mind Expanders (II?) (var.,60's- early 70's) Tr.5, The Scottmen : "Sitar Sitter" 4 min A-go-go psych with sitar, some brass arrangements. * Purple Lantern Rec. Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers vol 5 (var,60's-'70's)**** Tr.16, Ananda Shankar : "Cyrus" 3 min Ananda Shankar's first album contained very dynamic sitar beat. Later works were more relaxed. This track is beautiful too. The Electric Psych sitar series is highly recommended. This is one of the most interesting ones. -PS. I forgot to bring this release with me at the radioshow. I played the following track instead : * Reprise Rec. Ananda Shankar (IND,1970)***** Tr.2, "Snow Flower" 3 min Mostly Sitar Beat styled. This track is very mature. The music is less a-go-go, More "musical" arranged compared to releases like "Lord Sotar" etc.. Webpage of Ananda Shankar group : http://www.westbengal.com/arts/music/shankar/ Another page : http://www.wildsscene.com/music/india_as.html Some info at http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll First album : http://www.showandtellmusic.com/pages/galleries/gallery_k/ananda.html Another album : http://www.showandtellmusic.com/pages/galleries/gallery_k/anandaand.html * Shiva Sounds Ananda Shankar : Sá-Re-Gá (IND,1981)***** side A, Tr.1, "Sa-Re-Ga Machan" 10 min Tr.2, "Romantic Rhino" 5 min Tr.3, "Charging Tiger" 4 min Tr.4, "Night in the forest" 4 min Side B, Tr.5, "Jungle King" 3 min Tr.7, "Monkey's Tea Party" 4 min Tr.10, "Jungle Symphony" 4 min First track is a filmic music fragment, Indian music with Western/ middle eastern orchestral arrangements and some prog rock additions further on., in a genius blend. Third track is wonderful A-go-go. Last track of side A is another perfect romantic filmic blend of various styles. Too difficult to leave out tracks I kept the whole score of side A to broadcast. "Jungle King" is a more upbeat happy blend. "Monkey.." has wonderful and original genius moog with experimental and Indian percussive elements (and flute). "Jungle Symphony" is in an original a-go-go style originally arranged. LP reissue of '81 item. If I compare historical recordings from Ravi Shankar with Ananda Shankar I wonder what all the fuzz about Ravi was about. Ananda really understood as one of the first how to blend east and west. * Simla House Ray Spiegel Ensemble : Sum and Kali (US,1997)*** Tr.5, "Sum and Kali" 6 min Tr.8, "Kali Ma" 16 min 22 I especially like this melodic percussion track of Ray Spiegel, and the final track on the album. Review and links at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview.html * Sonet Rec. Oriental Wind & The Karnatake College of Percussion (TÜ/IND,rec.1984)**** Tr.1, "Sankirna" 8 min Tr.2, "Bahagya" 9 min Tr.3, "Bitlis" 4 min 21 A very good combination of one of the best Turkish percussionists with one of the most famous Indian percussion groups. Oriental Wind originally from Turkey plays jazz. Here this group is mostly a Scandinavian group (Okay Temiz went to Scandinavia to learn the jazz). This is combined with Indian music. Especially side one is very good. There has been a second cooperation release with Charlie Mariano, published on ECM. Review and links at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/indojazzreview.html * Shanarchie Ashwin Batish : SitarPower (IND,1986)**° Tr.3, "Sitar Magic" 10 min (shortened) Tr.4, "Bombay Boogie" 10 min 20 96 Strange use of primitive electronic music combined with Indian music, mixed in a typical Indian way. Sometimes a bit less succeeding, sometimes very fitting and original, new. The Ananda Shankar Expierience & State of Bengal (US,1998)***° Tr.3, "Pluck" 7 min Tr.5, "Jungle Symphony" (live) 4 min Tr.10, "Reverse" 7 min 18 More modern hard beats and slow breakbeats and rock fusion band combined with Ananda's talent. Ananda's last studio project. The live track is very energetic music. The hard beats are (produced) a bit too hard for me sometimes, but the music is interesting. The live track is ver energetic. "Reverse" is rhythmically very original/interesting. Fourtet : Dialogue (I,1999)***°' Tr.10, "Aying" 5 min Tr.12, "Charm" 3 min 8 Modern drum & bass mixed with great modern jazz and other elements, here with Indian touches (tabla,..)., classical arrangement's loop. There are very fine dynamic mixes done here too. Last track is a sitar loop, remixed in studio with an effect as if the sound becomes a double bass. Review : http://www.whitetown.co.uk/jyoti/archives/000084.html Band webpage : http://www.marcellosebastiani.it/fourtet.english.htm Contact band : info@marcellosebastiani.it Outro : * Global Music Centre Yat-Kha : Yenisei-Punk (TUVA,1995)***°° Tr.2, "In the endless black steppe" 4 min Tr.3, "Kaa-Khem" 6 min Tr.5, "We have protection force" 4 min Tr.12,"Kargyram" 11 min Unique combination of ethnical folk with throat singing from Tuva with sometimes a kind of garage rock approach to traditional music, then a very musical dynamic hard folk sound. Last track is an example of experimental throat singing.
