Playlist "Psyche van het Folk", Radio Centraal, Antwerpen, Belgium IRAN & TURKEY : FUSION, CROSSOVERS & PROGRESSIVE ROCK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PART 1, IRAN : FUSIONS. * Private Babak (Amini) : Magic (IR,2000)**** Tr.6, "Moonlight" 4 min Tr.7, "Loneliness" 4 min Tr.8, "Saba the wind" 3 min 11 Professional and beautiful chamber guitar pieces, with some band arrangements (at first track here with some jazz influences). At such a level it is difficult for me to review for I am not such a specialist to have the skills to do this. I can hardly give my own impressions. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/Persiareview.html * Narada World Axiom of Choice : Niya Yesh (IR,2000)***° Tr.6, "Parvaz" 5 min 5 16 Axiom of Choice is emigrated to the US. The music however has kept its roots in Iran. This track is with lyrics from Fereidoun Moshiri's poem "Daam". The music is very fine world music with a melancholic flavour (like Dead Can Dance have too) Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/Persiareview.html * Narada World Axiom of Choice : Unfolding (IR,2002)***° Tr.4, "Turquiose Land" 5 min Tr.5, "Trough the shadows part 1" 4 min Tr.6, "Trough the shadows part 2" 5 min 13 29 Fusing World Chamber Music with now and then a Dead Can Dance touch. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/Persiareview.html PART 2, TURKEY : FUSING GENRES. (with one extra Iranian / Persian example further on) * Rough Guides The rough guide to Turkey (TÜ,var)° This ok compilation gives an good idea of some existing contemporary styles in Turkey without choosing outstanding tracks for it. Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURKCOMPI.html * Putumayo World Music Global Soul (var,2003) The label made commercial compilations destined for big masses. Tr.6, "Girl" : This track was taken from the Ilhan release. It came from : Info : http://www.putumayo.com/cd_global/global_soul.html * EMI/Double Moon Rec. Ilhan Ersahin : Harikalar Diyari / Wonderland (TÜ,2002)? Tr.1, "Oriental Wind" 8 min Tr.4, "Ask" 8 min 5 min 13 42 Very good combination of modern club styled electronica beats / sounds with jazz fusion, pop, and Anatolian folk elements. 2 fatanstic tracks ! Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html * ? Mustafa Özkent Orkestrasi : Genclik ile Elele (TÜ,197?)****° Tr.7, "Zeytin Yagi" 5 min Tr.8, "Silifke" 4 min 9 51 Fantastic a-go-go psych. Electric Wah wah guitars, hammond organ and funky guitar, complex psych dance rhythms. The other item I heard from özkent, "Elif" is more easy listening Turkish music. * Yonca Rec. TRT Ara Müzikleri vol 1/2 (TÜ,197? ; vol 1, ***°,vol 2 ****) CD1, Tr.9, "Ilgaz" (Onder Bali) 3 min CD1, Tr.12, "Cecen Kizi" (Emin Findikogli) 3 min CD2, Tr.12, "Denizalti Rüzgarlari" (Okay Temiz) 5 min 11 61 A-go-go,easy listening tunes & crossovers, sometimes in odd combinations. Last track for instance is a very good combination of an African sound in a Turkish way ! After listening to them a few times I began to like it more and more. Vol 1 is more light weight, folk with orchestrations and arrangements, vol 2 is more progressive, in a light way too, but highly pleasant and joyful. For this show I choose the most psych rhythmic tracks. More in another future show ! Cover scan and some info at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/TURK2.html * private Fairuz Derin : Bulut (TÜ,200?)***°° Tr.3, "Kervan Geçmez" 4 min 65 They have their own webpage now and their CD will be out soon too ! One of the most interesting Turkish groups around. Review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview.html My mebpage : http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/FAIRUZ.html Their webpage : www.fairuzderinbulut.com Contact Group : fairuz68@yahoo.com * ? Hardal : Nerden Nereye (TÜ, 1982)° I like this album even less than the other one I reviewed / played before. Small review at http://psychevanhetfolk.homestead.com/Turkprogreview1.html * Pan Music Alex : Alex (D,)*** Tr.5, "Derule" 3 min Tr.1, "Patella Black" 4 min 7 72 Turkish rock made with and produced by Can members, with clearly a very good influence on some tracks (like on "Patella Black"). Style was called in Germany "Turk Rock". Musically the style is great. Played with baglama and western instruments. You can hear Alex lived for several years in Turkey before. His second album is similar in style but I prefer his first album. It's not so rare. * ? Cem Karaca : live in Ankara 1977 (TÜ,1977)***°° Tr.6, "Sevdan Beni" 12 min 84 Cem Karaca is a very powerful rock voice. Here with Derdihan / Dervisan. This track is a must have / heard. It's symphonic prog rock at its best. The recording is not the best, contains many mistakes too, but the music is too great to miss. It starts as quiet jazzy rock, becomes rock with fantastic symphonic rock organ play (-with one of the best improvisation parts I heard for years). The most freak out 70's psych track I heard from Turkey. To be compared with the best psych prog from anywhere. Webpages about Cem Karaca : http://progressive.homestead.com/CEM_entry.html Webpage about Cem Karaca Dervisan : http://www.progressive.homestead.com/dervisan.html * Cem Karaca : Bekli Beni (TÜ,1982) Album made in Germany. Not so good. *? Murat Ses & Nejat Teksoy (TÜ,)***°° Tr.1, improvisation 8 min 92 Some covers are not so great at all, but some organ passages are very good. One of the last recordings with moog was warped unfortunately. Webpage about Murat Ses : http://progressive.homestead.com/Murat_Ses.html * ? Gökcen Kaynatan : Tr.1/2 : Pencerenin Perdesini & Beyoglunda Gezersin (TÜ,?) 10 min 10 One of the rare electronic music singles. Thank you, M.C. for recording this for the show. Webpage about Gökcen Kaynatan : http://progressive.homestead.com/GOKCEN.html * Edip Akbayram with Murat Ses (TÜ, 197?) Tr.A, "Garip" 4 min 104 Webpage about Edip Akbayram : http://progressive.homestead.com/EDIP.html (See also Murat Ses page at http://progressive.homestead.com/Murat_Ses.html for seeing picture of the band on this single) * Sembol Plak Edip Akbayram Dostlar : 1984 (TÜ,1984)*** Thes tracks were chosen, but last minute I decided to play those in another future show: Tr.1, "Leylim Ley" 5 min and Tr.3, "Ey Sevgilim" 5 min Although this is much more usual pop music, compared to the earlier albums this album is partly still fine, and the voice of Edip is more enjoyable, in a typical Turkish way. The arrangements are fusion pop, lightweight rock, also with some classical arrangements. But various tracks are already more mainstream pop. Webpage about Edip Akbayram : http://progressive.homestead.com/EDIP.html * Sembol Plak Edip Akbayram : 1985 (TÜ,1985)*° The tr.7, "Vesikali Yarim" of it starts with classical guitar, with keyboard, electric bass, a Turkish ballad, is still enjoyable. Bonus : * Caltex Records Kouroush Yaghmaie : the best of (IRAN,197?)***** Tr.3, "Khar" 7 min One most romantic middle eastern crossover progressive pop examples, very enjoyable. Music which makes me happy. Review at http://progressive.homestead.com/PERSIAreviews.html * Acid Symposium John Berberian & The Middle Eastern Ensemble (US?,197?)***** Tr.1, "The oud & the fuzz (4/4) 7 min Tr.3, "Che-oo-Chem" 6 min Tr.4, "Iron Maiden" 4 min Recently reissued on CD. John Berberian played fuzz guitar on various records these days, like flamencorock with Sabicas, and here middle eastern rock with John Berberian. I don't know from which country John originally is. Info at http://progressive.homestead.com/MiddleEast.html * private Bonus Track : Lost in Nowhere (TÜ, 2003)*** Tr.6, "Orientation" 5 min Tr.4, "Hyperspace jazz" 3 min 8 With metal, folk, progressive rock, jazz influences in a unique blend. * private Hazerfan : Lost in Nowhere (TÜ, 2003)*** Tr.2, "Black spirit" 4 min Tr.6, "Impeller" 4 min 8 16 150 Having changed their name to Hazerfan I heard their raw mix. I hope the group will mix / produce it with as much attention to all instruments, and not just too much to the metal hard rock bass only, which is here a bit loud now and then.
