Astral Projection  Lamp Of The Universe : Heru (NZ,rec.2003-2004,pub.2007)**'

This recording was originally only released on a limited to 200 copies cdr by Barlfire Rec. but now is available on CD for the first time. Perhaps it is the most successful of all 4 releases of this now also long deceased solo project from the bassist of the former (stonerrock band) Datura, Craig Williamsons.
The Astral Projection label seems to give these releases with regular pauses for the reissues of a year, a second life; -their sound of a timeless trance can be considered not to be out of fashion-.
This release is a circular trance-psychedelic journey starting off with a tampura drone, mixed with some electronic overtones along with it, rainstick, New Agey semi-Indian-devotional and wordless background vocals, until hand percussion appears and the electronic spacey sounds move a bit more.

The music is slowly moving, like a large group of swirling starlings in the sky, but with more patience and more extremely slow like simple trance-psychedelic music. The vocals continue the singing in their somewhat devotional way, while the hand percussion is like from a Hare Krishna group, repeating itself. At part 3 a sitar improvisation comes in. On part 4, only the wavelength electronica with some remains of tampura drone are left over. Then a, really fine, also slowly moving, moody, living on the waves with somewhat sliding smoothness, an electric guitar takes over the improvisation. The background vocals come back in with the significance of a mechanical drone loop. A second guitar wawa’s and echoes closely follow the leading guitar improvisation. Last three tracks return, in switched order, to the first tampura drone, along with tabla, before some other electronic space waves appearances and another bit of sitar improvisation. This is relaxed, trance-educing music, and shows a certain consistency in how it is built up.

I have to admit I had to lay down this release a long time before being able to judge on to overrule my preexpectations. If I read "sitar and psychedelic folk" I am often too much reminded at Incredible String Band and such. Various releases of the last ten years are nothing like this.
New psychedelic trance groups are much more often a stronger influence. The stoned character, the mood being more important than the interesting skilled playing did not seem so attractive at first. The music reminded a lot at the new Swedish groups related with the former Xotic label. If you let yourself into the mood of the music it  works, if trying to trace anything else it doesn't. Very dreamy and trippy effects saturated with sitar, echoing electric guitar, drums, backing vocals could make you stoned indeed, not in a mindexpanding way, but to relax mostly. This can be heard in a combination of electric guitars, sitar echoed voice with percussion (drums or tabla) mostly. With the acoustic guitar song with echoed voice, on "her cosmic light" I wonder again how much S.T.Michael was an inspiration. But still, I wonder, how much this is seen from a need to express a musical mood rather than coming from a inspired depth. The electric guitars often used are really ok, but don't expect any overload of inspiration.

The second release did not improve much. It kept its original concept of relaxing trance psych, this time with even more monotonous raga jam. Some added keyboards (organ ?) are a good idea, but can't get the item beyond the spacy flee. I think the first release might be the best starter.

The label went bankrupt lately, partly, it was said because of too much pirate copying of neo-prog material. Two more releases of Lamp Of The Universe saw the light :
